Dr Veena Sahajwalla, from the School of Materials Science and Engineering, is doing some fascinating research into new iron making techniques. This research is sponsored by Rio Tinto to look at this particular reaction occurring in their process. The video below demonstrates an aspect of the research, in which carbon boil reactions are measured. Essentially, this is the response when hot metal with oxygen bearing gases are exposed to intense temperatures. Measurements obtained from these reactions are extremely important, as the carbon boil reaction has a very significant impact on the efficiency of the iron making processes, and provide information about the various operating parameters that impact on that reaction.
