Paula Dawson, College of Fine Arts

Paula Dawson, from the School of Art in the College of Fine Arts works with holograms as an art form, which she ties closely to a strong spiritual orientation. One such hologram is "The Shrine of the Sacred Heart", which is a holographic art work which was made for parishioners of St Brigid's, Sydney at the request of parish priest Father Peter Carroll. St Brigid's Church is located in Brooke Street, Coogee and is administered by Missionaries of the Sacred Heart. The Shrine of the Sacred Heart was opened by Sister Rosemary Crumlin, RSM and blessed by Father Frank Perry, MSC on 20 July 1997. The Shrine of the Sacred Heart is a permanent work but the laser which reilluminates it is expensive to run so viewing times are currently restricted to Sunday morning between 7.30 am and 11.30 am.

Included here is one page from the full website describing the hologram, but the full explanation makes fascinating reading, and provides a detailed description of the processes, and artistic and spiritual inspiration, as well as of the scientific processes involved. These may be found at http://www.vislab.usyd.edu.au/gallery/paula.

Another of Paula's works, which is still under construction, may be explored at the following address: http://www.vislab.usyd.edu.au/gallery/paula/greenworld.
